20220627 Arriving in Tambo for about the third time we decided to stayed in the caravan park to wait out the rain that's heading our way. What can I say about Tambo, it's a lovely town in central West Queensland with a small population, is home to the Tambo Teddy and chicken races at the North Gregory Hotel and there's a new coffee shop on the street, so it does have a bit to offer that weary traveller passing through. The first Post Offices in Tambo was built in 1876 and is now used as a the Museum with some interesting items to view. The wall telephone, powered by dry cells, was an invention of the late 1870s. The first telephones used in Brisbane were imports from the USA and were adjusted to local needs and demands. The first telephones were housed in wood, especially susceptible to cracking in hot and dry regions. Non of these phones would work witout the Switchboard The owner of a telephone would call the exchange and a switchboard operator would answer, the caller wo...

20220627 Qld Ilfrocombe to Blackall

20220627 Now for that 150km trip back to Longreach, stock up on supplies, top up the fuel at $235.9 a letre t hen head back to Ilfrocombe to camp the night. You can tell it's the school holidays due to the influx of caravan's and camper trailers monopolising the towns but my first guess was when we went to the bakery and the line was out the door, it's a busy town in Longreach, we completed our chorse and left for Ilfrocombe. This is one hell of a Swollow's nest I found while walking the streets in Longreach. Get off the road, it's not often they get a police escort so that tells us there's something big coming. I've never seen a wide load that took over both lanes like this one, get off the road Des.  Langenbaker House is a good example of what the buildings were like dating from 1892, made of timber and corrugated iron, it was occupied by the original family until 1991. The veranda features latticework made from hoop iron which was once used to tie wool pa...

20220622 Well so much for a nanny nap, I forgot about all the cattle grids we have to go over, sometimes it feels like the van is going to snap in half. We are definitely in yabby country now so while Des putts along and pulls off the road when oncoming traffic gets closer, I keep an eye out for a camp spot with a creek. The problem out here is, we need to be aware of soft dirt and if it rains, we are in deep shit, but thankfully there's no rain about. We passed a few creeks that looks like they could be crawling with yabbies only theirs no were to pull off, then I spotted a great camp were the ground is solid and right next to a creek, that's us for the night or three depending on the yabbies. The pots are in, now to collect some wood and sit back and wait, what better time for a coldie. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 We didn't have to go far to collect wood which is a nice change so while Des gets our beer I set the fire alight then we settle in for the night, just Des and I in outback Que...
