20120425 Qld Leyburn and Nobby

Image
20120425 Stopped at Warwick where Des's Mum (Phyllis) come from, Phil told me many stories of the dances at the local hall, I'm sure she would have been a hard one to catch. A fly by shoot of this great old church. The Palace Hotel, it's for sale if anyone's interested. The Town Centre we didn't stop just drove through. Leyburn, we stopped at Shane Webcke's pub, well that who Des recons owns it, only the sign above says "Jonweb" so were a bit confused.  Sitting down having our drink when the funniest thing happened, one of the locals asked me if I would like to have a game of Two-Up, no thanks I said, the local:what about your father, well! I nearly spat my drink out, I had tears running down my eyes, Des wasn't real impressed and left, but he couldn't help but laugh. This is the third time this has happened to him, he's now trying to think of a comeback for the next smart ass. 20120426 It has turned bloody cold the weather...

20120424 NSW Goondwindi to Texas,

Image
20120424 At Goondiwindi we stocked up with supplies, Des was getting low on Beer, and I was out of wine, not good. A bit of a stroll around the town and some pic before we find a laundry mat then head to Texas.  Goondiwindi’s name was derived from the Gundawindi pastoral run which operating around 1838, the name thought to be derived from an Aboriginal expression referring to wild duck or a resting place for birds. the Historic Bridge was built in 1914 and was once the main hub for freight crossing the border between N.S.W and Queensland, where duties were collected by Custom. Gunsynd, the famous Goondiwindi Grey, an icon of racing as the only horse to win at every track along the eastern seaboard, remains a legend today. The Pillars are a symbol of the vitality the water and river have provided to this township and region.  The three pillars represent the dynamic eternal trinity of past, present and future as well as remembering the founding settlement a...

20120422 Qld Tulwood

Image
20120421   The tiny town of Talwood is well known for its annual Picnic Races held on the June long weekend each year. People travel from afar for this event and the town swells to ten times its normal population. Arriving at Talwood starving, we parked up and walked to the shop for bread then home to make a chicken burger. Des starting preparing his pots then off we went on our big adventure, we finally found the dam Phil told us about and once Des baited the pots, we dropped them and headed home to wait for the big catch, we hope. Des bating up for the big catch. More campers had set up and we meet a kiwi couple Jan and Steven, Des was telling them about the yabbies and Jan was interested to watch so when it was time to pull the pots she came with. It was very exciting pulling each pot and counting how many were in each pull. Des meet another camper and showed him our catch he was digging out his pots and Des offered to take him on his next pull. They continued the same...

Image
20120418 We missed the turn off to Nindigully about 15ks out of our way so around we turn and head back. Ya! Were here, now to find that special spot to park up, right next to the pub will do me, I can roll out and fall into bed. We walked around trying to find a place near the water, but this thing is too big to get under the trees, we parked about 300ft from the pub, "nice". Straight to the pub, we meet Peter, the deviate hippy, Trevor, the have a chat and Bob who volunteers his help in the pub. The Happy hour bell rings at 4.30 and Bob yells, "Happy Hour" people come out of the wood works, the D.J start singing, and we drank more. We had a great night but can't remember weather we ate; we woke the next morning pretty hungry, so we think not. 2012 will be Nindigully Pub 8 th year of racing pigs and the event helps raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.   Last year over $14,500 was raised which is a lot of money for a small town with a populati...
